LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Summarize data from historical and ongoing studies examining adjuvant therapy for non-small cell lung cancer
  • Review the prognostic and predictive factors for chemotherapy treatment for patients with NSCLC
  • Identify the role of immunotherapies in the adjuvant setting for patients with resected stage IB-lllA NSCLC

ACTIVITY OVERVIEW

Corey Langer, MD, FACP, Mark Socinski, MD, and Johan Vansteenkiste, MD, PhD, in a roundtable discussion, review updated clinical information regarding adjuvant therapy for treatment of resectable NSCLC with a focus on the future of immunotherapy.

STATEMENT OF EDUCATIONAL NEED

There is a significant need for education regarding optimal adjuvant strategies for resectable NSCLC. The availability of novel emerging therapies is revolutionizing treatment from a ‘one size fits all’ approach to more individualized strategy. Practicing oncologists are, therefore, now faced with selecting the best treatment strategy for each patient, first-line and beyond. To do this effectively, it is essential that oncology specialists are knowledgeable about the latest results from clinical research and the implications of these data for clinical practice.

To optimize outcomes in patients with resectable NSCLC, there is an urgent need to address clinical knowledge gaps regarding the many recent scientific and treatment advances in this area. Because adjuvant treatment of NSCLC is multimodal and multidisciplinary, educational opportunities on this topic will reach beyond medical oncologists to the broader oncology healthcare community. Finally, due to the rapid release of data in this field, oncology specialists require a “one-stop” comprehensive educational opportunity where they can receive updates on a number of topics in the field of lung cancer. Many oncology specialists require further explanation and expert interpretation of trial data before they are able to effectively and appropriately incorporate the new information into clinical practice.
