Target Audience, Statement of Need, and Educational Objectives | Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and other translational-oriented laboratory scientists involved and/or interested in the multidisciplinary care of patients with cancer.
Statement of Need
As the rate at which clinical data are released increases and the numbers of therapeutic options grow, it is important for practicing oncologists and hematologists to stay abreast of these advances. Many community oncologists, hematologists, and other physicians involved in the management of hematologic malignancies and solid tumors do not attend major society meetings and, likewise, those who do, find the size and scope to be so broad and intensive that they require summaries of important data for ease of application to their daily practices. In order for rapid clinical progress to have a direct and immediate impact on patients’ lives, the newest findings must be readily applied by the practices of community oncologists and hematologists. In addition, the data presented at large clinical conferences are typically not framed in the context of the clinical practice of community oncologists/hematologists. prIME Oncology presents “Oncology Reviews Unlimited—A Critical Appraisal of Data from the 2010 Oncology Annual Meeting,” to review, summarize, and interpret the most clinically significant data released in an effort to meet this need.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
• Discuss challenging issues in the management of patients with breast cancer, including neoadjuvant therapy, HER2-positive and triple-negative disease, and bone health.
• Describe recent advances in the treatment of renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer, and evaluate clinical trial data supporting the use of novel agents in the management of patients with genitourinary malignancies.
• Integrate multimodality treatment strategies, including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy, into the management of patients with lung cancer.
• Evaluate contemporary therapeutic approaches for the management of patients with gastrointestinal cancers, and review the latest advances in improving survival rates and quality of life in this patient population.
• Recommend state-of-the-art treatment strategies for patients with hematologic malignancies.
• Integrate novel findings in the management of solid tumors into clinical practice.
