CME Information
Statement of Educational Need
The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 10.5 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive in January 2003, and about 1.4 million new cases were expected to be diagnosed in 2008. With so many patients with cancer nationwide, there is tremendous variation in patterns of care. Despite national guidelines, such as National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), surveys reflect that there are differences among community practices as well as basic awareness of new targeted agents and mechanisms of action for cancer treatment. Meanwhile, an increasing number of new therapeutic products are in clinical testing and going through the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process. It is critical that knowledge of new clinical information be disseminated to practicing oncologists as quickly as possible by experts in the field.
