Patient Education

Patient education is a systematic process to help individual patients gain knowledge regarding health care and clinical practices. Typically, patient education provides patients and caregivers important information on medical topics and imparts valuable skills in self-managing specific conditions, diseases, and illnesses. Patient education is a necessary tool in order to effect a change in patient behavior and help improve compliance rates. Furthermore, it empowers patients and caretakers to get involved in the treatment decision making process. While each patient has different preferences in how they learn, effective patient education materials and resources include:

  • Brochures and printed collateral
  • YouTube videos
  • Websites
  • Podcasts
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Posters or charts
  • Anatomical models
  • Videos or DVDs
  • Group classes
  • Trained peer educators
